Free to write. Unlimited. You only pay for AI.
Every feature of the editor, every book you write — unlimited, and free. Structure and goals, print estimates, ambience, your Map, writing stats, exports. The only thing that's ever metered is the AI — and even that starts free.
Two halves of Calliope
A studio for the manuscript, and the AI around it. The first is free and unlimited. The second is the only thing you pay for — and it never writes your prose.
The writing studio
Free · unlimited books
A real editor for long books
Not a text box that happens to hold a novel — the whole apparatus of writing one, and none of it costs a thing.
- The page
- Book typography, warm paper themes, light & dark, focus mode, typewriter scroll, and ambience.
- The manuscript
- Parts, chapters, statuses, nine synopsis styles, goals & deadlines, and live word, page, and print estimates.
- The world
- Your Map of characters, places, and facts with memory; marginalia (notes, to-dos, references); and find-duplicates.
- Reflect & finish
- Writing stats and Writing Wrapped, and export to DOCX, EPUB, PDF, or Google Docs.
Plenty of apps have an outline or a word goal. Few go this deep — and none of this is behind a paywall.

Pay as you go
An AI that has read your book
Grounded in your real manuscript — and open to the AI tools you already use.
- The companion
- Reads your chapters, finds every mention, quotes your real text, and checks your canon — beside the page, never on it.
- AI actions
- Consistency checks, research with web search, entity detection, and synopsis drafts.
- Bring your own AI
- Point Claude, ChatGPT, or Cursor at your book with the MCP connector, or script it with the Writer API.
The only metered part of Calliope — and it never writes your prose.
See how the AI is priced ↓Do you need an account?
No — open the editor and start; your writing is saved in this browser. Make a free account and it's saved to Calliope instead, so a cleared cache or a closed tab can't lose your book. Opening and saving project files from your own disk is on the way. Either way the account costs nothing — the only thing you ever pay for is AI.
What the AI costs
Two ways to pay for the metered part — most writers only ever need credits.
Credits
Pay as you go. No subscription.
- ·Credits power every AI action in the app — chat with web search, consistency checks, synopsis drafts, character and place detection.
- ·Runs on Calliope's built-in, canon-grounded AI. Nothing to configure.
- ·One-time top-ups, no auto-renew. Buy more only when you want to.
- ·Metered at real usage — no per-token surprises to decode.
New here? Anonymous visitors get a tiny free grant — enough for a couple of AI calls to try it. Those credits follow you when you sign in.
Write with your own AI
Optional subscription — for driving Calliope from your own AI client.
- ·Write access over MCP and the Writer API. Let Claude Desktop, Cursor, or your own script edit your annotations, structure, and Map. Without it, MCP is read-only.
- ·A €10/month AI allowance that works across the web app and MCP — spent before your prepaid credits, reset every 30 days.
- ·It still never writes your prose. There is no prose-write tool over MCP, by design — the author's hand stays on the body.
Connecting a client and reading your manuscript is always free — no subscription needed.
One balance, spent the same way everywhere: if you subscribe, your monthly allowance is used first, then prepaid credits — across both the web app and MCP, so there is nothing to juggle.
Prices are shown excluding tax. Payments are handled by Stripe as merchant of record (Stripe Managed Payments), which calculates and adds any applicable VAT at checkout based on your location. You receive an invoice for every purchase.
Free or paid, one line holds across all of it: Calliope augments; it never writes your prose.
Pricing questions
-
Is the app really free? +
- Yes. The entire editor — unlimited books, every feature, and export to DOCX/EPUB/PDF/Google Docs — is free, with no trial and no card. The only thing that's ever metered is AI assistance. You can write an entire novel in Calliope and never pay a cent.
-
Do I need an account? +
- No — open the editor and start writing straight away; your work is saved in your browser. A free account saves it to Calliope instead, so a cleared cache or a closed tab can't lose your book. Opening and saving project files from your own disk is on the way. Either way, the account is free; you only ever pay for AI.
-
Do I need a subscription to use the AI? +
- No. AI assistance in the app runs on one-time credit packs — pay as you go, no subscription. The subscription is an optional add-on for driving Calliope from your own AI client over MCP (or the Writer API), which most writers never need.
-
What does the subscription actually add? +
- Two things. First, it unlocks write access over MCP and the Writer API, so a connected AI client (Claude Desktop, Cursor…) or your own script can edit your structure, annotations, and Map — never your prose. Without it, MCP is read-only. Second, it includes a €10/month Calliope AI allowance that works in the web app and over MCP, spent before your prepaid credits and reset every 30 days.
-
What happens when I run out of credits? +
- The AI features pause with a calm “out of credits” notice — nothing breaks and nothing is lost. The whole editor, your Map, structure, counts, and notes keep working. Top up a pack whenever you want; there is no auto-renew on credits.
