Calliope vs iA Writer

iA Writer is the reason Calliope can hold its position with a straight face. Since 2010 it has been the canonical distraction-free editor — focus mode that dims everything but the sentence you’re on, typewriter mode, plain-text Markdown, a Style Check that quietly flags clichés and filler, and a feature set kept deliberately, almost stubbornly small. The Apple Design Awards and Red Dot wins are earned. So is the trust. When we say “calm, minimal, structure-aware,” we are describing a standard iA Writer set.

It is also the only tool in this market whose philosophy is, nearly word for word, our own. iA Writer’s “Authorship” feature visually marks which text was human-typed, which was pasted, and which was AI-generated — and the app ships no generative AI at all, on principle. Their framing is exact: use AI as a dialogue partner, a writing companion, never a ghostwriter. That is Calliope’s thesis. We did not improve on it; we inherited it.

No consistency engine aimed at your manuscript — the Style Check catches clichés, not the moment a detail you established in chapter 3 quietly contradicts chapter 17. The Authorship feature tracks the line between human and AI text beautifully; it does not offer you an AI partner to work with on the human side of that line. That is a deliberate stop, faithful to the minimalism. It is also the exact gap Calliope exists to fill.

Who should pick which

If you want the quietest possible plain-text editor with a long, decorated track record and no AI of any kind, iA Writer is excellent and proven, and we’d point you there without hesitation. If you share its values but want the companion it stops short of building — research, consistency, and structure-aware canon, with the same hard line against generation — Calliope is the next step those values imply. We think of ourselves less as an alternative to iA Writer than as the continuation of the standard it set.
